The Style Files: Etsy finds for independent style this winter

Make sure you stand out from the crowd this coming winter by finding one of a kind pieces to work into your wardrobe.  The great thing about buying from your local vintage store or Etsy sellers is that you can embrace indie style.

Etsy style finds for cold winter days

There is no need to sacrifice style on cold winter days. Winter fashion doesn't have to mean resorting to puffer jackets and ugg boots to keep you warm.

Have a few merino basics that you can layer under your winter wardrobe for extra warmth. These can be easily found anywhere from the likes of Glassons, Max, or The Wool Company.

A good winter coat is a great investment. Wool is best and will last you a few winters if you look after it well.

Fur (fake or vintage) is everywhere this winter. Check out your local vintage store. Or else there are some great options available online from Etsy / Ebay / Trade Me.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is anything made from Harris Tweed. Made from pure virgin wool, this cloth is handwoven in the islands of the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Wear a vintage tweed blazer to add a touch of class. If the fit isn't right, be brave and upcycle the fabric into a clutch bag. Black and red tweed is great for adding a bit of punk style.

Have a few options for winter accessories - some neutral mittens for your morning walk to work and something less conservative for the weekend.

Here are a few etsy finds for staying stylish (and warm) this winter:

Sweet dreams (are made of this)

New seasons are always a great time to have a spruce up and try out something new. It can be hard to relax and get a peaceful night's sleep if you surround yourself with clutter and negativity. The bedroom is where we start and end each day, so take the time to make sure it's somewhere you want to be.

Have a fresh start this season and try out something new. Here are some on trend bedroom interior styles to get you started...

Badass Heroines - The unconventional tale of Isabella Bird

Just listed in my Etsy store, this ombre knitted scarf is named after one of my ultimate heroines, Isabella Bird.

Isabella shetland lace scarf - knitted from 100% pure wool & handmade in New Zealand

A Victorian lady explorer who didn't let a little thing called convention stand in the way of doing what she wanted to do.

Isabella travelled the world, exploring China, Japan, Persia, India, Australia and even stopping off in my homeland of New Zealand (which she hated). She climbed volcanoes in Hawaii and refused to ride side saddle on her 800 mile journey through the Rockies.

While in Colorado she met and fell for the ultimate bad boy, an outlaw by the name of Rocky Mountain Jim. He liked his liquor and had lost an eye in an unfortunate incident taking on a grizzly bear. Isabella would say that he was "a man any woman might love but no sane woman would marry". Yet together they would ascend mountains, including their famous ascent of Longs Peak.

A winter's day in the woods

Winter weekend adventures
Looking for something to do this weekend? How about a stroll through the local woodlands? Pack a satchel, grab a friend and do some exploring!

What to take:
- a friend to explore with
- walking boots (some worn in Doc's are perfect if you have some)
- camera
- thermos filled with whatever takes your fancy (coffee, green tea, etc...)
- packed lunch (make it easy for yourself - some fresh crusty bread with hummus and last night's roasted vegetables & a couple of apples should keep you going)
- umbrella (just in case)
- a winter coat (because your mother would have made you take one)
